Hair growth: PRP for hair injections

Everyone loses up to 100 hairs a day, but millions of women and men suffer from excess hair loss. If your hair is thinning or you notice bald patches, you might have hair loss. In women, hair loss becomes more common after menopause while men can begin losing their hair in their 20s or even earlier. Hereditary factors are the most common cause of hair loss, including alopecia, male-pattern baldness and female-pattern baldness.

Although hair loss is common, it can still be distressing. If you’re bothered by hair loss, Dr. Pacheco can help. PRP for hair injections are a more natural solution to hair loss. You might be more familiar with “vampire facials,” and while that might sound more like something out of a horror film, it’s one of the hottest skincare trends out there and for good reasons. PRP therapy uses the nourishing elements of your own blood to restore a more youthful, glowing complexion. It also helps restore a fuller, healthier look to your hair, making PRP an excellent alternative to traditional hair loss therapies. Dr. Pacheco can help you decide if PRP for hair loss is right for you.

PRP for hair injections

Blood comprises red blood cells and plasma, and the plasma contains growth factor-dense platelets and white blood cells. These growth factors are essential for proper skin cell function, and they’ve been used widely to treat a lot of different conditions, including arthritis. Growth factors have also been demonstrated to stimulate hair follicles, promoting new hair growth.

What to Expect from PRP Hair Treatments

To begin your PRP hair treatment, we will draw a small amount of blood from your arm. This sample will be placed in a special machine called a centrifuge, which spins the blood and separates the red cells from the plasma. The platelet-rich plasma is then injected directly into the scalp at half-inch intervals around the hair follicles. The process usually takes about half an hour.

Although anesthesia is typically not used, the procedure isn’t associated with much discomfort. If you do have pain or discomfort after the procedure, you can take an over-the-counter pain reliever such as acetaminophen. Cold packs can also be soothing. Some patients might experience minor bruising at the injection site, but this is self-limiting and will usually dissipate over the next week or so. Most patients will have no downtime, but you might need to forego your typically styling routine for a few days.

Candidates for PRP Hair Treatments

You might be a candidate for PRP hair treatments if you have generalized hair thinning or have lost your hair early. Many patients need three to four monthly treatments before reducing their treatment period to once every three to six months or more. Results should be visible in a few months as hair begins to grow back thicker and fuller.

Benefits of PRP
PRP therapy offers quite a few benefits. Because the platelets are harvested from your own body, there’s no risk of rejection or allergic reactions. Healing is fast because the plasma stimulates your cells natural regenerative properties. There’s minimal or no scarring, which makes it especially beneficial for those undergoing PRP on facial and other skin. Swelling and bruising are minimal, and the results are fast and impressive.

Other PRP Treatments
Platelet-rich plasma therapy has many uses in both cosmetic and traditional medicine. It can combat inflammation, reduce arthritis pain, stimulate soft tissue healing and restore a glow to the skin.

With PRP, you’ll no longer need to get creative with your part. Your hair will gradually get fuller, thicker and healthier with minimal pain and few risks. You can reclaim your confidence and your natural appearance. Contact our offices today to learn more about your hair restoration options or to schedule an appointment with Dr. Lisa Pacheco.
