All About Juvederm
Juvederm is a popular injectable filler that is used by cosmetic physicians to fill specific areas of the face, including deep wrinkles, the cheeks, and the lips. It is a popular choice among men and women who are seeking a non-invasive, non-permanent way to fight the signs of aging on the face and enhance their appearance. But what exactly is Juvederm, and what happens to the gel after it is injected into your skin? In this post, we will take a close look at both what Juvederm is made of and how it breaks down and is absorbed by the body over time.
What Is Juvederm Made Of?
Juvederm is a smooth gel filler approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that is injected under the skin to fill wrinkles or enhance lips or cheeks. More specifically, the gel is made out of hyaluronic acid (HA), a hydrating substance that naturally occurs in the body and face. Over time, due to age, sunlight, and other environmental factors, the amount of HA in your skin decreases, causing wrinkles and other signs of aging. The HA in Juvederm is “cross-linked,” which means that the molecules are linked so that they form an injectable gel instead of a liquid. This gel adds structure and volume to your face when strategically injected by a medical professional.
What Happens To Juvederm After It Wears Off?
Juvederm lasts up to a year after it is injected, though some patients report that it may last longer. Most patients use Juvederm as an annual treatment. After it is injected, Juvederm integrates into the body’s tissues and has a smooth, natural feel. Over time, Juvederm slowly dissolves and is absorbed harmlessly into the body. As Juvederm dissolves, there is no pain and patients should not feel any symptoms of pain or discomfort, though they may notice the results of their initial injection fading.
Juvederm may last longer in some injection sites than in others. For example, Juvederm in the lips may only last up to six months, due to the increased blood flow in that area of the face.
