Like Medical Doctors, or, MDs, Osteopathic Doctors, or, DOs are board-certified physicians, who are fully licensed to perform surgery and prescribe medication. While DOs practice modern medicine according to the latest technology, they also receive additional training in the musculoskeletal system – this training provides Osteopathic physicians with a clear understanding of the ways that an injury or illness in one part of the body can affect another. As a result, they have a more holistic approach to patient care, focusing on treating the whole-person rather than only treating symptoms. Some Osteopathic physicians perform osteopathic manipulative or OMM, which is a gentle hands-on technique that consists of realigning the body to help disease, injury, illness, relieve pain and structural abnormalities. By combining other medical procedures with OMM, DOs are able to offer their patients the most comprehensive care available in medicine today.
