How Does Botox Work?
Aging and Wrinkles
As we grow older and older with the passage of time, our body ages with us as well and our skin starts to gradually lose its resilience. This loss in its resilience is what causes wrinkles in our skin. However, there is nothing wrong with wrinkles and they are completely natural. Wrinkles are okay, and everyone who grows old will have wrinkles sooner or later. Still, some of us do not like the idea of growing old and that is really understandable – it is always one step closer to death.
So, while you may not be able to do anything about the unstoppable march of time, you can at least try to look younger on the outside in the hopes that it might help you feel younger on the inside or whatever else your reasons might be. This is where Botox comes in. You see, Botox can help you reduce some wrinkles. But, how exactly does Botox reduce wrinkles?
The Botox Procedure
During the non-surgical cosmetic procedure, Botox is injected into the muscles through a medical syringe. The thin needle piercing the skin causes some discomfort as can be expected but that is all. If you are really uncomfortable with the needle piercing your skin, you can use an ice pack or apply an anaesthetic cream on the area. Otherwise, there should be no other problems.
The complete procedure takes no more than 10 minutes. Once administered, the Botox prevents the release of certain neurotransmitters from our nerves, which blocks the signals that are constantly firing from your nerves to your muscles at the neuromuscular junction. This weakens the muscle and it cannot contract anymore. And, when the muscle does not contract anymore, the wrinkles ease and loosen up.
After Your Botox Treatment
After you have had your non-surgical cosmetic Botox procedure done, you will start to see the effects of Botox within just a couple of days. You will see a visible reduction in your wrinkles and the full effects of the Botox can take up to a week or a month to show even more significant improvements. However, the effects will not last forever. After around half a year’s worth of time, the effects of the Botox treatment will start to fade away.
Your muscles will gradually get their strength back and start to contract again – they will return to normal functionality. As such, your wrinkles will come back as well. However, over an extended period of time, and after repeated Botox treatments, your muscles will become conditioned to stay relaxed and as a result – you will not need Botox anymore because your wrinkles will be smoother anyway.
