For many years, traditional liposuction was the only proven cosmetic treatment for reducing fat. While it was the right procedure for certain people, many others opted against the option because of cost, possible pain, long recovery times (up to six weeks), and the risk of complications.
However, in the last few years, new technology has been developed and approved by the FDA for fat reduction. These non-invasive approaches mean that, while the results may not be as dramatic as liposuction, they can happen without going under the knife and without extended doctor’s appointments or recovery times. They are also often more affordable than surgical options.
Choosing A Non-Invasive Fat Reduction Procedure
There are a number of choices for laser fat removal today, and all of them have a number of advantages and disadvantages. Below, we will take a brief look at four of the more popular choices:
- CoolSculpting. As you might guess from the name, CoolSculpting uses cold temperatures to freeze fat cells, which are then damaged and flushed from the body. It is FDA approved for the chin, thighs, abdomen, and flank.
- SculpSure. This is an FDA-approved laser that uses heat, not cold temperatures, to destroy fat cells while preserving the cells around them. This is for use in the abdomen and flank area and up to four areas can be targeted in a single session.
- Zerona was one of the first devices approved by the FDA for non-invasive fat reduction. It uses lasers to target fat cells, but the results are not permanent and it is less effective than many of the other choices on the market today.
- truSculpt. This device removes fat cells from your troubled areas by using radio frequencies to heat up the cells without disturbing surrounding tissue. It is FDA-approved to reduce cellulite and fat in areas like the thighs, buttocks, arms, and neck. Patients will need 3-4 treatments every 3-8 weeks in order to get the results they are seeking.
